Canine Pancreatitis

چکیده
Classification There have been many different classification methods employed for pancreatitis, which can be confusing if reading material from different authors. In contrast in human medicine the classification has been significantly simplified over recent years, with the main classification being as either acute or chronic disease. The main difference between the two is the potential ‘reversibility’ of the pancreatic changes. With acute pancreatitis, once the inciting cause has been removed, the inflammation and disease is completely reversible. In the case of chronic pancreatitis there is longer standing inflammation with consequent irreversible changes on histopathology, typically fibrosis and atrophy. It is important to realise based upon this classification the determination of whether pancreatitis is acute or chronic can only be made definitively based upon a biopsy and histopathological examination. The differentiation cannot be made upon clinical signs alone. Whilst acute pancreatitis can tend to be more severe, in some cases it is mild, and the clinical signs with chronic disease can sometimes be severe.

Assesment of severity and changes in C-reactive protein concentration and various biomarkers in dogs with pancreatitis
Canine pancreatitis is a relatively common disorder, and its mortality rate remains high. However, prognostic factors for pancreatitis based on evidence are limited. Moreover, the relationship between changes in C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration-an important prognostic factor for human patients with acute pancreatitis-and the prognosis of dogs with pancreatitis has not been widely studied....
متن کاملQuantitative Contrast‐enhanced Ultrasonographic Assessment of Naturally Occurring Pancreatitis in Dogs
BACKGROUND Quantitative contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) can detect pancreatic perfusion changes in experimentally induced canine pancreatitis. However, its usefulness in detecting perfusion changes in naturally occurring pancreatitis is unclear. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To determine the feasibility of using CEUS to detect pancreatic and duodenal perfusion changes in naturally occurring ...
متن کاملImaging of the Normal Pancreas and Pancreatic Disease
INTRODUCTION Pancreatitis is a common consideration in dogs and in an increasing number of cats presented for vomiting, anorexia, lethargy, or abdominal pain. The disease however, is difficult to diagnose definitively, especially in cats. Clinicopathologic data, including amylase and lipase values are used routinely when canine pancreatitis is suspected. However, they may be normal, or elevated...
متن کاملAcute pancreatitis: a newly recognised potential complication of canine babesiosis.
This retrospective study describes 4 cases of canine babesiosis with histologically confirmed acute pancreatitis. In addition, 16 dogs with babesiosis are reported with serum amylase (>3500 U/l) and/or lipase (>650 U/l) activity elevations of a magnitude that would support a diagnosis of probable acute pancreatitis, although extra-pancreatic sources of the enzymes could not be excluded in these...
متن کاملSerum pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity concentrations in dogs treated with potassium bromide and/or phenobarbital.
Potassium bromide, phenobarbital, or a combination of both is commonly used in the treatment of canine epilepsy. Several cases of clinical pancreatitis have been reported in dogs after treatment with potassium bromide, but the risk of elevated serum canine pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity concentrations in dogs treated with potassium bromide and/or phenobarbital has not previously been evalua...
